kearns mill housing development gets goľahead - 15/01/2007
A 39 unit housing development on the site of an old mill in the hills above Waterfoot in the Rosendale Valley, Lancashire, has been awarded planning permission and is progressing through detailed design.
The development maximises the re-use of the original mill buildings plus reclaimed materials from those buildings not retained. New insertions and interventions on the site interpret the traditional mill vernacular in a contemporary manner. In detail eighteen two bed apartments will be created in the shell of the original mill and six other dwellings will re-use significant parts of the other original mill buildings. The remaining five and four bed houses will re-use original materials from demolished buildings, and with energy efficiency to the fore of the design the development places sustainability high on its agenda.
Planning permission was granted at the end of 2006 and work is currently underway on detailed design proposals, creating a high end development of contemporary living spaces in this dramatic landscape.
