This £9M project provides Abingdon School in Oxfordshire with a first class Sports Facility, including an 8
lane 25m swimming pool, fitness suite, ergo room, spectator facilities, climbing zone, changing rooms and
a judo multi-purpose hall. The new build elements of the design wrap around an existing refurbished sports hall.
The swimming pool is characterised by a dramatic timber vaulted roof and high levels of natural lighting.
The sinuous wave form ceiling is formed from American Poplar and framed by glulam beams. The full height windows to the start end of the pool
create a visual connection between inside and out.
Externally the building has two distinct aesthetics, each created from a palette of simple materials. The
long form of the pool and the timber pavilion facing the playing fields, become two distinct elements that
break down the scale of the whole project.
